Why Study Sustainable Energy Engineering?
Sustainable Energy Engineering will play an important, if not dominant, role in future technological developments. With advances in sustainable technologies and the complex requirement to solve issues of global warming, Sustainable Energy Engineering now enables the development of engineering systems that are compatible with current trends of reduced emissions, fuel efficiency and the use of environmentally sustainable materials.
What will you learn?
Students will have a broad knowledge of the principles and technologies used for the generation, storage and transmission of energy from sustainable sources. The Sustainable Energy program includes three subplans in Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The three streams will have a large common content, sharing courses in fundamental principles related to sustainable energy from the existing offerings in Chemical, Electrical and Electronic, and Mechanical Engineering Programs, but with greater specialisation in one of the three disciplines in each stream. In addition courses on technologies specifically related to sustainable energy which will be shared between the three streams.
Students will gain specialised knowledge in chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering such as to allow them to design and optimise the related components of sustainable energy systems.
The first two years of the Sustainable Energy Engineering program are devoted to building the engineering, mathematics and physics foundations that are followed up with specialist engineering subjects devoted to the chosen stream of specialisation in the final two years. The program emphasises engineering problem solving, analysis and design, computer-based methods, and research, communication and management skills.
Graduates of this program will have an appreciation and knowledge of social, environmental and technological issues related to the sustainable supply of energy combined with an in depth technical knowledge in one of the disciplines of chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering and the ability to design and optimise engineering systems in that discipline.
